Verbier Ski Holidays
Verbier is truly one of our favourite resorts as it is one of the most outstanding ski and boarding areas in Europe. It lies in a sunny, well sheltered position in Switzerland’s Southern Alps. The resort is made up of chalet style buildings surrounded by some spectacular pistes. Verbier is a fashionable, informal and lively village that is full of cosmopolitan visitors. Most of the shops and hotels are set around the Place Centrale and on the sloping streets stretching both up and down the hill to Medran which is the main lift station. Ski chalets, hotels and apartments are all available to book in Verbier.
Verbier Skiing and Boarding
Verbier’s ski area is vast, varied and high and has over 400Km’s of runs to tempt you with. Verbier is part of a linked area called the 4 valleys that incorporates Nendaz, Thyon and Veysonnaz. Beginners have some lovely sunny nursery slopes close to the middle of the village and at Les Esserts. After this you will progress onto the blues at La Chaux. The huge ski playground that is the Verbier/Mont Fort area offers some of the most varied skiing and boarding in the Alps with 206Kms of runs served by 43 lifts. Intermediates should head for the Savoleyres area as this has great pistes that usually have better snow and are quieter than elsewhere. Experts will just love the fantastic tough slopes that are on a plate for you along with the vast amount of off piste that is waiting for you to discover (with a guide of course) The Mont Fort cable car will take you up onto the glacier where there are some steep black runs that can become quite icy and you must try the itinerary run beneath the Tortin bubble as the bumps are huge and it is quite a leg burner! Verbier has some of the most amazing off piste in the world. Major freeride competitions are held there every year. If you are looking to do some exploring then definitely hire a guide and go for it. The main freestyle area in Verbier is at La Chaux. There are four separate lines that are made up of kickers, gap jumps, step-ups and hips. There is also an excellent chill out zone with deckchairs and DJ’s that does what it says on the can.
Verbier Apres Ski
In Verbier it all kicks off at about 4pm with a visit to the Powder Spirit Bar or the Offshore cafe at Medran. The Big Ben pub is always lively and of course we couldn’t be without the Mont Fort Pub. Our favourite is the Farinet as you can either collapse in the big sofas and chill out or step next door to live music and end up dancing on the bar if you like! After dinner the Mont Fort is always a favourite and for late night dancing try the Casbah in the basement of the Farinet or The Farm Club but do beware that it is seriously expensive. However, celebrities the likes of Angelina Jolie or Richard Branson do visit Verbier so you never know who you might bump into! Off the slopes there is a sports centre with pool, saunas and a hot tub. There are also some good walks and an Alpine museum. Dog sledding trips are on offer and there is also floodlit tubing in Les Esserts at weekends.
