Saalbach & Hinterglemm, Austria

Saalbach & Hinterglemm Ski Holidays

Saalbach and Hinterglem are picturesque twin villages that make up the vast ski circus in the attractive Glemm valley. They haven’t quite merged together yet but are very close to each other. Saalbach is a typically Austrian village with mostly traditional style buildings. These are set around a classic onion-domed church. Saalbach is very much the party town out of the two resorts.

Saalbach & Hinterglemm Skiing and Snowboarding

Saalbach and Hinterglem make up the area known as the Ski Circus that is pretty much entirely composed of broad slopes between forests. If you travel anticlockwise you can make a complete circuit on skis or boards crossing from one side to the other at Vorderglemm and Lengau. Clockwise is a bit more of a flaff as there is no lift on the southside. However, that said, the lift system is impressive and is mainly made up of gondolas and fast chairs. Beginners will find two sunny nursery slopes right next to the village centre in Saalbach. Hinterglemm’s spacious nursery area is separate from the main slopes and faces north so holds the snow well. There are plenty of blues to progress onto in both resorts. Intermediates that are looking to pack the miles in under their skis and boards will love the area as there are plenty of challenges to be found in the various reds and blues. The north-facing area has the most challenging runs and the black runs should be fine for good confident intermediates. Experts will enjoy the World Cup downhill run and the Schattberg West Hinterglem red. If there is powder conditions then hire a guide and you will find some good off piste without it getting tracked out quickly.

Saalbach & Hinterglemm Apres Ski

Après ski in the area starts early on and rocks right through till the early hours. Just above Saalbach on the hill is the Hinterhagalm that has live music and is popular at the end of the day. Once this closes at 6pm most people then head to the Bauer’s Schi-alm which is an old cow shed that has been known to be one of the liveliest après ski bars in Austria. After dinner head out to the Neuhaus Taverne for live music or King’s Arena for late night dancing. Over in Hinterglem there are a few ice bars that are good at the end of a day on the mountain.
