Grindelwald, Switzerland

Grindelwald Ski and Snowboarding Holidays

Grindelwald is a traditional resort set amidst the spectacular scenery of the Jungfrau mountain range and directly beneath the towering north face of the Eiger. The village has a long mountaineering history and is a lovely place to stay. The village is set on either side of a road along a narrow valley surrounded by towering mountains that rise up sharply from the valley floor. Three, four and five star hotels are all available to book for those perfect Grindelwald ski holidays.

Grindelwald Skiing and Boarding

The major area of slopes is shared with Wengen and offers a good range of wooded runs and open slopes higher up. There are nursery slopes just above Grindelwald including the new piste at Oberjoch and a ‘slow speed zone’ which is great when children are learning. Kleine Scheidegg has a good, higher beginner area with fantastic long runs to progress to. Intermediates will find that the Jungfrau pass gives access to 213Kms of pistes with a huge range of runs from relaxing long blues and reds to tougher pistes. For a tougher run try the World Cup downhill course on Wixi. Experts can try the scary Black Rock run that starts at the base of the Eiger. If you really want to challenge yourself head to the neighbouring resort of Murren and try the famous Kanonenrohr as it is almost vertical! There is some amazing off piste to be found if the conditions are good. Alternatively book a heli-trip with a guide. For cross country skiers there are 17Kms of prepared tracks. There is a terrain park on First that has rails, boxes and jumps. There is also a super pipe.

Grindelwald Apres Ski

There a few good après ski spots in Grindelwald such as Tipirama at Kleine Scheidegg for a drink just as you come off the slopes. Sometimes they also have DJ’s and live music. You could try the Holzer Bar on your way back to Grund. If afternoon coffee and cake is more your style then try the C&M Cafe und Mehr. For late night partying head to the Mascelero club. Off the slopes there is still plenty to do. Many of the mountain huts are accessible to pedestrians. A trip to Jungfraujoch - the highest railway station in Europe, is spectacular. The views are simply stunning and there is an ice palace in the glacier and a large restaurant at the top. There are 70Kms of toboggan runs including the world’s longest at 15Km. There is also a cinema and sports centre with pool. You could watch an ice hockey match which is always exhilarating or some curling for something a little more sedate. For a real treat take a helicopter flight from Mannlichen.

Grindelwald Childcare

The First mountain restaurant runs a day nursery and the Kinderhort Sunshine is a nursery at the top of Mannlichen.
