Engelberg, Switzerland

Engelberg Ski Holidays

Engelberg was very popular with the British in the early 20th Century. The resort is made up of grand Victorian hotels and chalet style buildings. The town has a traffic-free cobbled street and the sight of skiers on bicycles with their skis over their shoulders going to and from the lifts is a common sight. The resort was named after the 12th century Benedictine monastery that dominates the town as you look down from the lifts.

Engelberg Skiing and Boarding

Engelberg is a skiers and boarders paradise that has a fantastic snow record and lovely wide, open bowls of fresh powder to play in. This really is one of Switzerland’s best kept secrets where you will find something for everyone of all levels. Beginners will find the good secluded area of Gershnialp near the mid station of the gondola to be a good starting ground. Intermediates will love the red runs up on the Titlis glacier as they provide some fantastic high altitude skiing and boarding with stunning views. Mount Titlis is accessed via the world’s first revolving cable car so definitely worth a visit! The Jochpass area is sometimes quieter than Titlis and has some lovely long red and blues back down to resort. Engelberg really is a paradise for expert skiers as the off piste is superb so hire a guide and head out to discover the mountains around you. On the piste there is a 2000m descent from the Glacier and the Laub run is superb. There is a terrain park at Jochpass with a quarter-pipe, kickers and rails. Cross country skiers will find 44Km of valley trails and loops. The 1.5Km world cup route near the sports centre is flood lit two nights a week.

Engelberg Apres Ski

Engelberg offers some excellent après ski bars. The Chalet at the bottom of the gondola has a popular happy hour and the Yucatan in the main square also is also good fun. For some dancing head to the CC bar and Eden before finishing up in the Spindle nightclub. Off the slopes it is definitely worth visiting the monastery and the cheese-making shop. There is also plenty of winter walking and snowshoeing trails. Alternatively try out the Igloo village at 1900m where you can stay the night! There is also tubing and a good sports centre. For those looking for a little treat there are spa treatments at the Eienwaldi hotel.
