Childcare
For parents, Classic Child Care means being able to leave your accommodation after breakfast to head for the first lifts, only needing to return after the last one shuts.
We look after your children completely throughout the ski day if you wish. While the babies and toddlers go to our Nursery, staff take the older ones to our partner ski-school, collect them, give them lunch, run activities to keep them happy and stimulated and then take them back to their chalets for their high tea, giving you our super-convenient ‘Seamless Service’ throughout the day.
Our Child Care programme is now so extensive that at first glance it can appear complicated so please call our friendly and helpful team on 01350 728869 if you need any further guidance.Nurseries
Nursery Staffing
Our Nurseries are run by qualified British nannies or nursery nurses (DCE/CCE/NNEB or NVQ Levels 2 or 3, or equivalent qualifications), for six days a week from 8.30am to 5pm, with Child Care Assistants supporting in some Nurseries.
This is an important element to check when comparing with other crèche providers. (We may occasionally ask for your understanding if ratios are temporarily varied due to staff illness for example.)
Nursery Activities and Equipment
Nursery activities follow the same exciting ‘Theme of the Week’ as our Snow Club, such as ‘Arctic Antics’ or ‘Space – the Final Frontier’, so that all children in our care, including Nursery and Snow Club siblings, have similarly themed fun-filled experiences. Our Nursery toys and equipment are chosen for their educational as well as play features, and meet stringent health and safety guidelines.
Nursery Locations
All our resorts have fully equipped Nurseries, available exclusively to children staying with us aged from 4-40 months. Most are based in dedicated rooms in our larger chalets or Chalet Hotels, but in some resorts we have hired special rooms in local properties – see the relevant resort pages for details. Where we have more than one Nursery location in a resort, we allocate children so that their fun and activities can be more tailored to suit their ages and abilities, so your child may not necessarily attend the Nursery in your ‘home’ property, and you will be informed of the allocated Nursery on arrival.
Daily Routine
Our Nurseries are structured to provide a happy and stimulating environment for babies and toddlers.
Morning
A typical day begins at 8.30am, when the children have free-play to settle them in and to absorb the disruptions of any late arrivals and goodbyes to parents. Mid-morning Children have a snack and then those who need a nap can sleep in one of the Nursery cots, while the other children have a
creative session with paints, stickers or other craft activities.
Lunch
Specially prepared by our staff. Freshly made purées of varying consistencies are available for our younger guests, whilst older children tuck in to a healthy meal. We also stock our chalets with a selection of baby food, freely available.
Afternoon
There is another nap opportunity for the sleepy, and a structured session for the more active toddlers, such as Music & Movement or making cookies. Then, after an afternoon snack, the outdoor fun begins – weather permitting of course! Depending on age and parental consent, children may be taken on a ride in a gondola-lift, on a bus trip, out for a walk or simply to play in the snow. Older toddlers may even go ‘bumboarding’.
Day’s End The day draws to a quiet close with free play, and parents are asked to collect their Nursery children by 5pm.
High Tea
At 5.30pm, at least one parent is asked to accompany their Nursery child at High Tea in their ‘home’ chalet or Chalet Hotel. Freshly made purées are always available, as well as the main high tea choice for children.
Naturally the precise structure of the day will vary to take account of weather conditions, children’s routines and local facilities.
Children's Ski Classes
Small classes are a vital factor for children’s safety, enjoyment and speed of learning, so our initial ratios are 1:6 for Spritelet classes and 1:8 for all other Sprites.
The ski instructors may, however, move children from class to class to match their ability levels. We have found over the years that ability, as much as age, is a key deciding factor in balancing children’s ski classes. So, our stated ages are a guide and there may be a wider age range within the class, but the children’s abilities on skis will be similar.
Some ski-schools operate an assessment system on the first day of lessons to ensure children are placed in the appropriate class. Occasionally where there are two classes of the same level, the two instructors may combine their groups initially in order to best place children in the class where they will be happiest, but the overall 1:8 instructor: children ratio will always be maintained.
In all resorts, children are collected in the morning from their chalets, Chalet Hotels or designated meeting point, signed into our care by parents and taken to their Esprit lessons or Snow Club where our staff sign them into the care of their instructor. If children are also taking part in Esprit lunches and/or Esprit afternoon care or further classes, Esprit staff will also collect them at the end of their lesson and escort them to the next part of their day.
FREE Class Connection Services
With Esprit ski classes, you get not just the tuition itself, but also all the vital connecting services we offer, which ‘join up’ the different sessions to give parents peace of mind and a stress-free ski day for themselves!
So unless parents are collecting children themselves directly after a class, we always include our take-to and collection service, to escort children to and from their Esprit ski classes, and between their classes and supervised lunches, Snow Club or High Tea as appropriate, plus our stringent signing-in/out procedures at every point where responsibility for children passes between Esprit staff and parents or ski instructors.
At the end of all afternoon Esprit classes, our staff will also collect those children and escort them to join other Esprit children for the remainder of the afternoon, before returning them to their ‘home’ chalet, for continued supervision through High Tea till 6pm.
IMPORTANT
To avoid disappointment, places for all child care and ski classes must be reserved at the time of your initial telephone reservation.
Due to strict ratios of children per instructor we are unable to take bookings after your arrival in resort.
Esprit Spritelets – From £199
This class is for 3 & 4 year-olds and is orientated towards fun and play, whilst introducing the youngsters to wearing ski boots and skis. During Spritelets classes, one of our Snow Rangers stays with the group to help the ski instructor with the youngsters’ non-skiing needs (noses, clothing, cuddles!).
We run most of our Spritelet classes in the afternoons, as it is generally warmer in the afternoons than first thing in the morning, the children (and parents!) will be less rushed after breakfast and can slowly prepare themselves for their skiing, the nursery slopes will be less crowded and the morning Snow Club will be dedicated to the younger age group.
Please note that in order to join Spritelets, children must be permanently out of nappies during the daytime and capable of taking themselves to the toilet because there are no slope-side nappy-changing facilities.
Esprit Sprite Beginners – From £195
Morning ski classes of 2-21/2 hours tuition are available in all of our resorts, and are for 5-9 yearolds who are complete beginners or who cannot yet do basic snowplough turns.
Beginners will start with a gentle introduction on the resort’s nursery slopes to learn the basics and gain confidence, and will then venture on to start using the ski-lifts. They will normally be confidently skiing blue runs by the end of the week, before receiving their ski medal and certificate to take home with pride!
Esprit Sprite Improvers – From £265
Improver morning classes (2-21/2 hours tuition) are for 6-10 year-olds who can cope easily with all types of ski-lift and execute confident snowplough turns on blue runs. We can accept five year-olds only if they have previously attended our Sprite Beginner classes (or equivalent ski-school lessons.)
We also offer Sprite Improvers Xtra* classes in many resorts, with 2-21/2 hours instruction in the morning and 2 hours less formal and more fun skiing in the afternoon, and a lunch break in between. Esprit Xtra classes are aimed at 6–11 years, who will enjoy the extra skiing time in preference to Snow Club.
Esprit Sprite Intermediates – From £195
Intermediates are morning classes of 2-2 1/2 hours tuition, for 7-11 year-olds who have skied for at least two weeks and are starting to parallel ski, but still rely on snowploughing on trickier red runs.
We also offer Sprite Intermediates Xtra* classes in several resorts, with 2-21/2 hours instruction in the morning and 2 hours less formal and more fun skiing in the afternoon, and a lunch break in between.
Esprit Xtra classes are aimed at slightly older children, 7–12 years, who will enjoy the extra skiing time in preference to Snow Club.
Esprit Sprite Advanced – From £199
These morning classes are for 8-12 year-olds with three or more weeks’ skiing experience, who are confident on blue and red runs and are looking for more challenging guidance. Classes are available in selected resorts, and may include little jumps, soft snow technique at the edge of the piste, and slalom courses.
For the afternoons, we recommend our Guided Ski Fun or Snowboard Beginner classes for these children, who just love being out on the slopes!
*Children in Xtra Classes must also book Supervised Lunches, as they may lunch out on the mountain on some days and therefore be inaccessible for parents.
Esprit Snowboard Tuition – From £185
In order to provide a full range of snowboarding tuition as requested by our families, this year we offer snowboarding tuition for all abilities in conjunction with our partner ski and snowboard schools in their own group lessons. Our Esprit staff will still provide the seamless Esprit service of the take-to and collection of children before and after these lessons so that parents can enjoy maximum time on the slopes themselves.
Esprit Guided Ski Fun – From £195
This exciting afternoon option is hugely popular and is specifically for children from 6 years up of at least Improver standard, who want to use their skiing skills in an informal, free-skiing environment after their actual lessons each morning. For five 2-hour afternoons a week, an instructor will guide this group rather than formally ‘teach’ them, so they are still safely under qualified supervision, but with the emphasis on zooming around the pistes simply having fun!
Esprit Saturday Family Guiding – From £109
Saturdays can prove a dilemma for families, when children who have been learning all week are keen to show off their new skills, but parents may not yet feel confident about taking the family out on their own. Our Exclusive Esprit Family Guiding solves the dilemma!
There are two options – either Individual Family Guided sessions for 2 hours (morning or afternoon), or a Guided Group, where 2 or 3 families can ski together with a guide for 2 hours morning and afternoon, stopping for lunch (not included) on the mountain – a great way to end
the week with friends old or new.
Teenagers
For children who have outgrown our child care services, many of our resorts offer open ski or snowboard classes dedicated to teenagers, from Free Ride Courses, Off-piste Exploration and Race Training to more standard tuition. We will be happy to advise you what is available in your chosen resort and to pre-book these for your teenager.
Esprit Child Care Guarantee
We are confident that our child care services surpass those of any other tour operator, and that you will be more than happy with the way we look after your children and the progress they make.
To back this up, we offer our simple and effective Child Care Guarantee: if you are dissatisfied with any aspect of our child care, tell us why and what proportion of the cost you consider to be a fair reimbursement. We will then investigate thoroughly for you, and pay back an amount we agree is reasonable and fair within 28 days of receiving your written request.
This guarantee covers any situation where there has been any failing on the part of our staff or suppliers, but is not applicable where parents simply change their mind about child care requirements.
IMPORTANT
To avoid ruining your holiday plans, Nursery places must be booked with your initial telephone reservation. Due to our strict ratios we are unable to take bookings after your arrival in resort.
Clubs
Fun for children
Designed for children aged three to eight years, Esprit Snow Clubs are the half-day complement to our Sprite and Spritelets ski classes, and run six half-days per week, led by our Esprit Snow Rangers.
Snow Club sessions are tailored to suit the children’s ages and include a myriad of fun and exciting activities that we know children really enjoy. And linked to all is the Esprit Theme of the Week, e.g.“Wild Wild West” or “Treasure Island!” All the children’s activities and songs will follow the theme and this adds continuity to their week, naturally full of fun! All activities do depend on children’s ages, the weather and local resort facilities.
Staffing
Our Snow Rangers lead the Snow Club with endless enthusiasm, buckets of personality and dedicated professionalism. Out of all their noise and cheer comes the ‘Snow Club Pact’, to which all children contribute, and which includes serious features such as child safety roll calls and boundary limitations as well as loads of funfilled action. Our Snow Ranger teams operate with our stringent care ratios of 1:8.
Esprit Medal Ceremony
The crowning event of the week, to which all parents are also invited, is the Esprit Medal Ceremony, where all children in Esprit ski lessons and/or Snow Club receive their ski medals and Snow Club certificates. This is also the chance for the children to show their parents what they have been up to all week, complete with songs and mini-sketches, and everything they have made themselves, all linked to their week’s theme. A guaranteed photo opportunity and the ideal way to end the week on a high!
Locations and Timings
Snow Clubs run in every resort, sometimes in several locations, depending on the numbers of children involved. Where we have more than one Snow Club location in a resort, we allocate children of similar ages together, so that their fun and activities can be more tailored to suit their ages and abilities. Therefore your child may not necessarily attend the Snow Club in the property in which you are staying, and you will be informed of their allocated Snow Club on your arrival. Snow Club normally runs in the mornings for 3-4 year olds in Spritelets, and after lunch for older children. On Saturdays Snow Club for all
children is in the afternoon. Timings can of course occasionally vary due to resort conditions.
High Tea
At the end of the day children will be escorted back to their respective ‘homes’, where high tea will be supervised by our staff on five nights per week, so parents need only take control of their offspring at 6pm, except on our chalet staff’s day off, when children will be returned to their chalet or Chalet Hotel at 5pm.
Evening Care
Experience has shown that children under 6 find the daytimes action-packed enough and are best served by getting a full night’s sleep, ready to start again next morning.
Esprit Cocoa Club
For 6-12 year olds who are not yet ready for bed when adult-only dinner starts, we run evening clubs in all our resorts, but not in every property – please see the individual resort pages for details. Experience has shown that children under 6 find the daytimes action-packed enough and are best served by getting a full night’s sleep, ready to start again next morning!
Children staying in different properties are welcome to join Cocoa Club, but parents are asked to deliver and collect their children, unless otherwise specified on the resort pages.
Cocoa Clubs run under the supervision of a member of Esprit staff and are not structured sessions. They run from 7.30-10pm on six evenings a week.
The evening’s activities are very much guided by the children’s own energies and wishes and generally involve a different theme each evening.
There may be games, story-times, giant junk modelling or quiz nights, and one evening in the week there will be a mini-disco or other glamorous event!
Esprit Cocoa Club Plus
During peak weeks in many resorts and all season in La Rosière and Belle Plagne we run ‘Cocoa Club Plus’ for children aged 8-12 years. Under Esprit staff supervision, they will venture out three evenings a week in resort for some après ski fun, enjoying age-appropriate activities such as ten-pin bowling, a pool-table competition, hot chocolate in a café, ice-skating or similar, varying by resort. On the other three evenings, this group joins our standard Cocoa Club sessions.
In other resorts and on other dates, if your child has pre-booked Cocoa Club, there may be an option to upgrade to Cocoa Club Plus in resort, subject to enough children of appropriate age wishing to take part.
Esprit FREE Baby-Listening/Child-Patrol Service
For children aged four months and over, our Baby-Listening / Child-Patrol Service is provided free of charge in all our chalets and Chalet Hotels on our staff’s one day off (generally Thursdays) from 7.30-11pm. Our staff will patrol the corridors and monitor entrances and exits to the buildings to ensure the safety and well-being of children in their bedrooms. In larger properties there will be staff stationed on each corridor if appropriate.
We also offer this free service every evening from 7.30-11pm in all our Chalet Hotels, and 7.30-10.30pm in certain larger chalets (Alber in St Anton, the new wing suites in the Alpenblume in Obergurgl, André in Val d’Isère and Schatzi in La Rosière).
(Daily Baby-listening is not applicable to our smaller chalets, where, unless in Cocoa Club, children are generally asleep adjacent to or just upstairs from where parents are dining.)
